Nurturing Stem Talent

The UK government-backed initiative STEM Learning has named Raytheon UK its 2019 Inspirational STEM Employer of the Year (Large Organisation) at the STEM Inspiration Awards.

The annual event celebrates ‘the most dedicated individuals and organisations who inspire young people to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics’ as career paths. The judges recognized Raytheon UK’s dedication to STEM-related activities and in particular, how this commitment is embedded in the company’s culture.

“This award reflects our team's hard work to encourage STEM Education in the country," said Raytheon UK Chief Executive Officer Richard Daniel, a STEM ambassador himself. "The dedication of our 241 STEM ambassadors, who devote their passion and expertise on a volunteer basis, is truly admirable.”

Raytheon UK has a broad and robust STEM engagement programme that includes its flagship annual Quadcopter Challenge Competition, Raytheon’s Global Cyber Academy, the recently launched MathsAlive! UK, the Science Museum Group's Top Secret exhibition and the RAF Engineering Competition.

“We want ensure that young people gain a practical understanding of STEM through hands-on mentoring and fun and engaging activities,” Daniel said. "Hopefully, it will inspire and encourage future generations to pursue a career in the field.”

At the awards ceremony, held in the House of Lords on 5 November, STEM Learning's Chief Executive Yvonne Baker talked about the importance of celebrating people and organisations that promote STEM: “I am delighted to celebrate some truly amazing people, all of whom work tirelessly to broaden the horizons of young people in the UK,” she said. “In this year’s winners, we have seen fantastic examples of schools, colleges and STEM employers working together.”
