MARS - Maritime Afloat, Reach and Sustainability
In February, 2006, Raytheon Systems Limited (RSL) was one of three companies selected by the U.K. Ministry of Defence (MoD) to undertake competitive Continuous Assessment Phase contracts for the Military Afloat Reach and Sustainability programme. MARS will provide logistic support to Royal Navy Expeditionary Forces vessels at sea comprising Royal Fleet Auxiliary tankers and specialist logistics ships to support Amphibious Force and Carrier Strike Force operations. The Continuous Assessment contract will lead to down-selection of the industry Project Integrator, who will be responsible to form and lead the alliance to procure the ships and deliver the MARS capability.
Raytheon brings to MARS considerable experience as a Mission Systems Integrator and Programme Manager for major naval programmes delivered through partnership with industry and the customer to provide cost effective system-of-systems solutions. MARS builds on RSL's capability in the U.K. as a major supplier to the MoD and will benefit from the company's ‘reach-back' by leveraging the investment in tools, processes, and subject matter expertise developed on Raytheon's major U.S. Naval programmes. These programmes include DD(X) (the U.S. Navy's Advanced Multi-Mission Surface Combatant), LPD 17 (‘Landing Platform Deck' Amphibious Assault Ship), Australian Air Warfare Destroyer, CVN 21 (the U.S. Navy's new nuclear-powered aircraft carrier), and submarines. Reach back will be used to develop a centre of excellence at the Naval Integration Centre in Bristol close to the customer to deliver MARS and manage through life support.
