Raytheon has achieved the Carbon Trust Standard (CTS) with the help of Carbon Clear, a U.K. carbon management firm specialising in advising businesses seeking to measure and reduce their carbon emissions. The CTS aims to recognise organisations that have genuinely reduced their carbon footprint and are committed to making further reductions.
Raytheon selected the Carbon Trust Standard (CTS) as the validation scheme most aligned with the company’s objectives and then engaged Carbon Clear to manage the formal application process. This involved Carbon Clear’s CTS experts working closely with Raytheon to assess its readiness and presenting a detailed and compelling application to the CTS Company.
Raytheon has proactively managed its carbon impact since 2003, establishing the company as an environmental leader. Responding to the increased global awareness about carbon and environmental matters, Raytheon sought a high-profile external validation scheme that would recognise and communicate its sustainability achievements.
Tom King, U.K. Facilities Manager (Facilities), RSL Glenrothes said: “The Carbon Trust Standard offered us a great opportunity to prove our commitment to reducing our carbon impact. By working with Carbon Clear we were able to identify clearly and quickly the steps we needed to take. And their expert knowledge of the standard really helped reduce the burden of collecting and presenting the application data.
“Carbon Clear’s support was invaluable in helping us present a winning case and gain CTS accreditation.”

Raytheon completed the verification stage in December 2009 and achieved full CTS certification in January 2010, recognising its proven commitment to carbon reduction. It now proudly displays the CTS logo to inform and inspire its customers and staff. In addition, the CTS acts as an Early Action Measure to improve league table ranking of the Carbon Reduction Commitment strategy.
CTS certification has been an outstanding baseline from which to develop longer term carbon reduction goals. Capitalising on the internal momentum generated by the CTS, Raytheon and Carbon Clear have outlined an ambitious and long-term emission reduction strategy across several decades. Raytheon is currently implementing processes to cement its place as a low-carbon leader.
