FARNBOROUGH, UK, (July 11, 2012) — Raytheon UK and QinetiQ have achieved a major milestone in the development of Compact Penetrator warheads, with the completion of ‘sled trials’ at the UK’s Pendine test range. The Compact Penetrator warhead has the same outer mould-line and mass of the current Paveway™ IV enhanced Mk 82 warhead and has demonstrated a significantly increased penetration capability through the series of target engagement trials. Raytheon UK and QinetiQ have been working closely with Thales under the UK’s Weapon Technology Centre Compact Penetrator programme. The 25 month initiative will also undertake operational environment assessments, such as transportation, handling and air carriage.

Bob Delorge, chief executive of Raytheon UK, commented: “With this latest development, coupled with our own technological investment and partnerships with UK industry, Raytheon UK continues to advance the potential of Paveway™ IV to meet the emerging needs of the UK’s armed forces.”

In addition, the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) has also procured further Paveway™ IVs from Raytheon UK under a new £14 million contract. The production of this new procurement follows the £60 million Operation Ellamy replenishment order, which is scheduled to commence deliveries at the end of July this year.

Raytheon UK’s programme growth path will enhance the system’s capability with the low collateral and penetrator warhead options, enhanced moving target capability and enhanced range.
